The Frank Shorter Track Classic is a track meet honoring one of America's greatest ever distance athletes, Frank Shorter. Every year we will celebrate Frank's career, his devotion to the sport of running, and promotion of health and fitness, while also acknowledging a different Boulder Olympian every year. For 2024, we are excited to announce Dathan Ritzenhein, will be the local athlete we will be honoring.

Dathan represented TEAM USA at the 2004 (10,000m), 2008 (Marathon) and 2012 (10,000m) Olympics; 2007 (10,000m); 2009 (10,000m) and 2013 (10,000m) World Track and Field Championships; 2002 and 2005 World XC Championships (Placed 3rd in 2001 U/20 XC Race); Placed 3rd in 2009 World Athletics Half Marathon Championships; Won 3 USA Track & Field XC Championships 2005, 2008 and 2010; Won 2 USA Track and Field Road Championships 2005 (10K) and 2017 (25K); and was a 6 x All-American with the University of Colorado Track & Field/ Cross Country.

Dathan is now the head coach of the successful On Athletic Club (OAC) team here in Boulder, CO.

  • The Frank Shorter Track Classic on Sunday May 12th, will host a series of track races over 800m, 1-Mile and 2-Miles, and will be held at Niwot High School (8989 Niwot Rd, Niwot, CO 80503).

ABOUT FRANK SHORTER
Frank was a two time Olympian and won a gold medal in the marathon at the 1972 Munich Olympics while also placing 5th in the 10,000m. Then 4 years later, Frank won a silver medal in the marathon at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Frank also won the U.S national cross country championships four times (1970 - 1973), was the U.S Olympic Trials champion at 10,000m and the marathon in both 1972 and 1976, won both the 10,000m and the marathon at the 1971 Pan American Games and was a four time winner of the prestigious Fukuoka marathon (1971 - 1974).

  • We are offering a limited edition Frank Shorter Track Classic T-Shirt for $10.00. T-Shirts are unisex sizing, so this means they are men's sizing. You must register before Monday, April 22nd to guarantee one.

Meet Day Information -

COST - (This will help cover track hire, electronic timing, portable toilets, insurance and race medal)

  • Mountain Lions Participants - FREE

  • 19 YEARS & UNDER - $15.00 ($10.00 for any additional events)

  • 20 YEARS & OLDER - $20.00 ($15.00 for any additional events)

PLEASE NOTE: The final timetable for our meet, is determined by how many registrations we get. A rough timetable with the slowest heat going first is:

  • 9:00AM - 800m

  • 10:00AM - 1-Mile

  • 11:00AM - 2-Mile

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • There are NO age restrictions or time standards to enter.

  • All athletes will be placed in heats with other athletes that have recorded similar times.

  • Heats will run from slowest times to fastest times.
