SUNSET TRAIL RUNNING FESTIVAL 2019

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22

  • Race Day Information for those that have registered can be found here.

  • To guarantee yourself a T-Shirt, you must be registered by September 4th!

Join us Sunday September 22nd, 2019 for the Sunset Trail Running Festival in Gold Hill, Colorado. There will be a 50K, Heavy 1/2M (14.5M), 10K, 5K and kids 1K trail race that start and finish in the main street of Gold Hill at the Gold Hill Inn and this event is located on the National Forest.

The Sunset Trail Running Festival offers a scenic tour of Boulder County and runners will enjoy varied terrain of dirt roads and trails, running through ponderosa pine and aspen forests, while taking in amazing views on this challenging course. The 50K and 1/2M head west on the old railroad grade which is now known as the Switzerland Trail and run through the historic town of Sunset.

After the race, celebrate your accomplishment with your family, friends, and fellow participants at our after race party. We will have food, beer garden and live music!

“People seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay, and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty.” - Chief Niwot

WHY THE NAME “SUNSET”?

Near the turn of the 20th century, the Switzerland Trail was the major source of bulk transportation in the area, carrying supplies and tourists to mining camps and towns in the front range, ore from the myriad mines to a few centralized mills, and refined metal down to Boulder for transport to the rest of the nation. A federal ore assay office, was built at the turn of the 20th century and was located near the community of Wall Street, Colorado, at the intersection of the Switzerland Trail route with Fourmile Canyon. SUNSET was an important branch of the Denver, Boulder and Western Railroad with a train stop there and at the time, was a bustling community, driven by the presence of an ore mill and the railroad.

The town of SUNSET will play an integral role in this new race just as it did at the turn of the 20th century! The 12M and 23M point in the 50K, will run through SUNSET, while it will be the turn around point in the 1/2 marathon event.

Don’t miss out on one of the only trail races in Boulder County.

FOURMILE WATERSHED COALITIOn and fire district

The Sunset Trail Running Festival is a promotion of health, fun and fitness while supporting a tax exempt organization/ partner, the "Fourmile Watershed Coalition and Fire District”. The Fourmile Watershed Coalition, local Fire Districts and other partners are working to increase the health and resiliency of our forests by restoring natural conditions through strategic thinning, prescribed burning, reforestation in burn areas and education. Healthy forests are more resistant to wildfire, help to preserve clean drinking water supplies, offer diverse habitat and are a vital resource to those who recreate in them. 100 years of fire suppression has led to overly dense and unhealthy forests. Unhealthy forests are prone to larger and more destructive wildfires. ALL proceeds and funds raised will support the collaborative efforts of local communities to protect and preserve the forested watersheds in and around the Sunset Trail Running Festival race route.
